On 30 November, the Santa Cruz Municipal Council hosted a training session dedicated to raising awareness about endemic and invasive species on the island of Madeira. This initiative, aimed at technicians and employees in charge of planning and maintaining the municipality’s green spaces, is part of a series of actions promoted in the scope of the LIFE Natura@night project, in which the Municipality of Santa Cruz is an active partner.

Tânia Costa, SPEA technician, led this two-hour knowledge-sharing session. The training covered a variety of topics, including Madeira’s native and endemic flora species, highlighting their ornamental potential. It also explored ecological aspects such as habitat, adaptations to the environment, flowering time, as well as practical aspects including planting time and water requirements. Finally, topics such as ecological restoration, invasive exotic species and techniques for recovering degraded areas were discussed.

This initiative not only trained the professionals responsible for green spaces, but also intensified Santa Cruz’s environmental commitment, highlighting how knowledge plays a decisive role in promoting island biodiversity.
