In October, SPEA – Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds intends to reduce public lighting, to protect juvenile seabirds. To this end, a fundraising campaign was launched, in which for every 10 euros raised, municipalities will turn off a lamp on the island of Madeira.

In the dark of night, shearwaters emerge from the burrows in which they were born and look for the glow of the sea on the horizon. But unfortunately, the reflections of the sea are not the only glow in the Atlantic – nor the most obvious one. These inexperienced juveniles are “fooled” by artificial lights and lose their way. Dazzled, they fall to the ground, are injured, and may even die.

Every year we save hundreds of shearwaters in Madeira and the Azores. With your help, we can do even more. Make a donation for a #NoiteComVida.
