Street patrols to save seabirds are about to begin.

To safely rescue seabirds, we must know them, be able to identify them, and understand how to proceed when we encounter them.

To that end, SPEA provides both in-person and online training sessions aimed at volunteers who will be part of the scientific brigades.

The topics covered include light pollution, how it affects seabirds and humans, the existing seabird species in Madeira, and their characteristics.

Volunteers receive the necessary guidance for the upcoming two weeks, including a brief introduction to the Save a Seabird Campaign, the materials to be used (headlamps, reflective vests, cardboard boxes), and how to fill out the field form (time and location of collection, condition of the bird, weather conditions, among others).

Every year, light pollution causes hundreds of juvenile seabirds to become disoriented and fall into our cities.

With the help of our volunteers, by patrolling the streets, we will be able to protect our emblematic birds and help them safely reach the sea.
