Join us in protecting seabirds on the island of Madeira!

Throughout the year, young seabirds leave their nests and set off on their first journey. Artificial lighting attracts these inexperienced birds, causing them to collide and fall in city centers, exposing them to immense danger.

  • September 15 to October 15: Zino’s petrel (Pterodroma madeira)
  • October 15 to November 15: Cory’s shearwater (Calonectris borealis)

Regional volunteering

Between October 23 and November 5, we need volunteers to walk the streets at night to find and rescue seabirds. By patrolling the streets of Madeira, we will be able to save these iconic birds, which are particularly affected during new moon nights.

You can participate systematically in the scientific brigades, or occasionally, by walking routes near your area of residence.

Training volunteering

The scientific brigades take place in the municipalities of Santana, Machico, Santa Cruz, Funchal, and Câmara de Lobos, as part of the LIFE Natura@night project. To participate, we provide training in:

  • Seabirds and their threats
  • Birds of Madeira and census methodologies
  • Beginner’s guide to working in wildlife conservation
  • Insects and bats of Madeira and sampling methods
  • Geographic information systems (QGIS)

We also offer a 30% discount at the Funchal Youth Hostel, valid from October 26 to November 6.

Each participant will be entitled to insurance and a certificate of participation, as well as an excellent experience and knowledge acquisition in the field of biology.

Take part in the Mega Blackout

On October 30, between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., turn off the exterior lighting of your home or building. By reducing the lighting on the streets of Madeira, we will be able to prevent these iconic birds from crashing. Help us create a path in the sky so that the shearwaters can fly safely towards the sea.

Save more birds: Increase your impact by reducing lighting throughout the critical shearwater season between October 15 and November 15.
