The face-to-face collection of surveys is over!

From January to May we walked the streets of Câmara de Lobos, Funchal, Santa Cruz, Machico and Santana, talking to the population, aiming to know their perceptions about light pollution.

At SPEA Madeira the collection of surveys in the field was streamlined by the technician Tânia Costa and counted with the valuable support of the trainees Simão Vieira and Vítor Camacho. Hundreds of hours and people were approached, 379 hours and 579 surveys collected, to be exact!

The dissemination and implementation of the light pollution survey also had the support of municipalities and other project partners.

Together with the online surveys, we got a total of 1816 answers within the partner municipalities in Madeira.

This survey, implemented for people of all age groups from 18 years old and up, seeks to find out people’s perceptions of light pollution and their support for changes in public lighting. The results of this survey, which will now be processed, will provide important information for municipalities to know what their citizens think and to work together to find better lighting solutions for people and biodiversity. It will also allow us to identify knowledge gaps and thus focus on dissemination and awareness raising.

We hope that by responding to this survey, people have become more aware of this threat and become more aware of the LIFE Natura@night project.

This survey was also implemented in the municipality of Santa Cruz da Graciosa in the Azores and in the municipalities of Mogán and Buenavista del Norte in the Canary Islands.
