The Municipality of Funchal has installed new lights between the Ponta Gorda Bathing Complex and Madeira Magic.

The installation of these lights aims to reduce the impact of light pollution in this pilot area, thereby helping to protect nighttime biodiversity.

Additionally, these lights can have their intensity and temperature adjusted to minimize negative effects on the local population, providing greater safety, energy savings, and reduced ecological impact.

This intervention, in collaboration with the technicians from the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), is part of the LIFE Natura@night Project. It comes at a time when juvenile shearwaters leave their nests heading for the sea and need as little artificial light as possible, as this is the main reason they become disoriented and fall into cities.

The installation of new lights has been carried out in several partner municipalities of the project (Santana, Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos, Machico, Funchal, Santa Cruz da Graciosa, and Mogán) with the goal of reducing light pollution and protecting the emblematic birds of Macaronesia
