Over the course of 2023, SPEA and Machico Municipality have been carrying out a series of collaborative actions as part of the LIFE Natura@night project, in order to raise awareness of the problem of light pollution and raise public awareness.

The LIFE Natura@night project’s interpretive table was inaugurated on 20 June. Through this structure, on the right shore of the Machico stream, visitors and residents will have access to information about the threat and the measures taken by the municipality to combat it.

Also during the summer season, beach visitors can explore the Madeira seabird exhibition located on Banda d’Além beach. Each bird in the exhibition has an information sheet about the species.

This exhibition was developed by representatives of the Eco-schools of the Municipality of Machico:

  • EB1/PE/C Eng. Luís Santos Costa
  • EB1/PE/C Água de Pena,
  • Academia Sénior da Ribeira Seca
  • ECOS Machico
  • Infantário Rainha Santa Isabel
  • Universidade Sénior de Machico
  • EB/PE do Porto da Cruz
  • Biblioteca Municipal de Machico

As part of this effort to protect both the population and biodiversity, the Municipality of Machico will be making changes to public lighting in specific areas of the municipality. The locations covered by this action include the seafront of the parish of Machico, which also includes Largo do Município, as well as the seafront of the parish of Caniçal and the seafront of Porto da Cruz. In this context, a study of the number of luminaires that will be the target of intervention is already underway, as well as analysing the technical solutions to be implemented.
