Have you ever had the opportunity to explore Madeira’s nightlife? Are you looking for an exciting activity for your group? Not afraid of the dark and love learning while having fun? We have the perfect solution!
Peddy-paper “a night with more life”
SPEA Madeira has prepared a peddy paper with the goal of presenting the incredible biodiversity that comes alive during the night. In this adventure, we will set up different observation posts, each one dedicated to unique species, such as bats, seabirds and insects, besides a special post with informative materials.
In addition to the impact of light pollution on biodiversity, participants will learn about some of the methods used to study these animal groups:
At the bat observation station, participants will have a unique opportunity to see a preserved specimen of the Madeira pipistrelle (Pipistrellus maderensis)! In addition, they will be able to try out the devices that SPEA uses to detect the bats’ echolocation.
At the insect station, everyone will have the opportunity to observe how insects are attracted by artificial light and observe several specimens stored in an entomological collection.
In seabirds, with a sound amplifier, participants will be able to listen to seabird vocalizations, and get to know the species of seabirds nesting in the region.
After immersing themselves in this fascinating knowledge, participants will return to the starting point, where they can better understand the work of SPEA and obtain promotional materials for the LIFE Natura@night project.
This activity is perfect for all ages and can be adapted to any size group. Ideally, we recommend that this activity takes place close to the shore, during a new moon night, to ensure the experience is full of surprises. For the most effective effect, the location should be naturally dark, and if not, we recommend a local blackout during the activity. Either way, all you need is your torch and a lot of curiosity!
Don’t waste any more time and come and enjoy Madeira’s nightlife! To schedule your participation in this magical night, please contact SPEA.
