The LIFE Natura@night project is raising awareness by launching an informative video in November 2023 that explores the harmful impacts of light pollution on the islands of Macaronesia.

With footage of beautiful island landscapes and cities, the video highlights the vital importance of the natural cycle between day and night, emphasising the dependence not only of the human species, but of all forms of life. Technological advances and the rapid spread of artificial light present significant challenges for ecosystems and biological rhythms, giving rise to light pollution. To tackle this challenge, 13 partners from the archipelagos of Madeira, the Azores and the Canary Islands have joined forces in the LIFE Natura@night project.

The video not only highlights the problem, but also emphasises the importance of the community in the process of sensitising political decision-makers to the need to reduce light pollution. Practical day-to-day tips are also suggested, such as switching off unnecessary lights and taking part in campaigns to rescue seabirds impacted by excessive light.

The LIFE Natura@night project emphasises the importance of collective collaboration not only in preserving nocturnal biodiversity, but also in improving the quality of life of local communities.
