Last 22nd April, the Queimadas Forest Park, in Santana, hosted the first BioBlitz in Madeira. This event, intended for the general public, was held as part of the Festival of Biosphere Reserves of Portugal, in partnership with Santana’s Town Hall.

The SPEA team, together with guest specialists, namely Miguel Sequeira, Sérgio Teixeira and Miguel Andrade, led the biodiversity inventory of the area. In a didactic way, the participants could register the species they were observing using the iNaturalist/Biodiversity4All platform. In all, 37 participants contributed with their observations, having been registered more than 50 species in the event.

This BioBlitz in the Laurissilva of Madeira was an opportunity to raise public awareness to different groups of living beings, namely plants, insects, birds and bats.

SPEA thanks all participants and wishes that the success of this first edition in Madeira serves as an incentive for new events of this kind in the Region.
