From October 23rd to November 5th, SPEA worked with volunteers to patrol the streets of Câmara de Lobos, Funchal, Santa Cruz, Machico and Santana.
The outcomes of these scientific brigades of the Campaign Save a Seabird were excellent and we managed, over 14 days, to play a crucial role in the survival of the young Cory’s Shearwaters.

Some highlights of these weeks:
🚶‍♀️160 km traveled daily, for a total of 2240 km
🦸 50 local volunteers
🛬 12 volunteers from outside the region
🐣 88 Cory’s Shearwaters rescued
☠️ unfortunately, we were late for 5 birds

A very special thanks to all volunteers and everyone who contacted us with occurrences.

The Campaign goes on from October 15 to November 15, which coincides with the departure of the nests of juvenile Cory’s shearwaters, which fall in our cities, victims of light pollution. Be aware and, if you find a bird, contact the Rede SOS Vida Selvagem of the Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza, RAM, through 961957545.
