The Câmara de Lobos municipality has installed 29 new luminaires with LED technology and controlled spectrum, which minimize the emission of blue light, reducing the negative impacts of light pollution on nocturnal biodiversity.
This initiative is part of the LIFE Natura@night project, of which the municipality is a partner, and aims not only to protect seabirds, but also to provide a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors to the city.
Dina Silva, the councillor responsible for the environment, stresses that this is “a crucial project for the environmental sustainability of Câmara de Lobos, which combines the protection of biodiversity with the promotion of a more efficient and safer urban environment”, which in turn promotes energy efficiency, resulting in a reduction in electricity consumption.
With regard to the number of luminaires described, 29 correspond only to the pilot area. It should be noted that the number of luminaires that will be replaced as part of this intervention totals 66 units.
The SPEA team has been raising awareness among the municipality’s hotels, restaurants and port agents, as a way of encouraging them to adopt responsible and sustainable lighting practices that are more environmentally friendly.
