The LIFE Program has played a key role in nature conservation in Madeira over the past three decades and was recently highlighted at the Iberian INTERLIFE PT 2026 meeting, held at the University of Évora.
Since 1994, this European Union funding instrument has supported 21 projects in the region, representing an investment of over 14 million euros. These projects have contributed significantly to the protection of iconic species, the restoration of Natura 2000 habitats, and the promotion of sustainable tourism models and skilled employment.
Among the most notable examples are initiatives developed by SPEA Birdlife – Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds, such as LIFE Natura@night and LIFE Fura-bardos. These projects have been fundamental to protecting iconic species such as the wood owl and the Eurasian scops owl, restoring priority habitats within the Natura 2000 Network, boosting nature-based tourism, promoting environmental education, and generating skilled employment, with direct benefits for the local economy.
LIFE Natura@night in the spotlight at INTERLIFE PT 2026
During the 5th edition of INTERLIFE PT, held on March 24 and 25, 2026, the work carried out in Madeira was presented as a success story of cooperation and innovation in nature conservation.
The participation of SPEA’s coordinator in Madeira, Cátia Gouveia, highlighted the impact of the LIFE Natura@night project, particularly due to its integrated approach with municipalities. The project was recognized for its broad scope and the results achieved in implementing more sustainable lighting solutions—combining benefits for citizens, greater energy efficiency, and the protection of biodiversity.
An example with an impact that extends beyond borders
The recognition received at the Iberian meeting reinforces Madeira’s role as a leading region in the implementation of best conservation practices. The model developed under the LIFE Natura@night project is now emerging as an example to be replicated in other regions, both within and outside the Iberian Peninsula.
The results achieved show that this investment generates lasting environmental, social, and economic benefits. We need tools like the LIFE Program to continue protecting our unique natural heritage.”

Participation in INTERLIFE PT 2026 highlights not only the impact of the LIFE Program in Madeira, but also the growing international significance of solutions that combine sustainable development, energy efficiency, and nature conservation.
